The sling is carrier that is worn diagonally, on one shoulder.
It is a most versatile and pratical carrier, because it is useful from birth to late toddlerhood, you can put the baby in a variety of positions, it is very easy to use, it is usually very compact (especially if you use a pouch sling) so you can always stuff it easily in any bag, and it is great for summer.
There are several types of slings: ring slings- either padded, like Slingezee or OTSBH, or unpadded like the Maya wrap or Zolowear, and pouch slings like Mamma’s milk or Hotslings.
A collection of carriers is never complete without at least one type of sling. Even if your preferred carrier is another, the sling is always useful when you don’t feel like tying your ethnic carrier, or full around with the straps of your modern one. Dads usually favor it because it is so easy to use (and I think dads deserve their own carriers). If you have a big kid who likes to walk most of the time, a sling in your bag takes very little space and is great for when he tires from walking.
