Using a bed or other surface in order to wear your baby on the back may be a little inconvenient if you spend a lot of time away from home and/or on your own, without anyone who can help getting the baby in or out. In that case it is very useful to learn how to lift the baby on the back without props. Though it may seem frightening at first, it only takes a little practice to manage it, and then your life becomes so much easier.
If you carry a newborn, I personally prefer to keep using props as a bed at least till the baby holds her head firmly and can manage the lifting. I know mothers who lift very small babies as well- I suppose if you’re really experienced and skilled, it is possible to do it safely, but it is not something I recommend to some one who’s never done it before. I usually advise to start lifting the baby at about 4-5 months.
At that age you can choose from a large variety of carriers. The simplest, in my opinion, are softpack carriers such as Ergo and Mei tai (but will describe more types such as Podegi, Onbuhimo and wraps in separate posts).
This is how you wear The Ergo carrier on the back without props. The Mei tai can be worn in more ways, such as this or that. Those are not the only ways but they are my personal favorites.
How do you get the baby down again? Will tell you about it in a different post
