Doll carriers!

These pictures just seem to say it all, don’t they?

Doll carrier! what a great gift for a child. It comes in a variety of colors and cute patterns, and you can choose your favorite type of carrier, just like mommy.

It is great especially for a child who is about to become an older brother or sister. It is a toy that encourages a child to imitate adults and feel like a grown up, so can be very helpful during that difficult period of accepting a new sibling, when many children seem to regress.

Like mommy, they can carry their doll around and have free hands for other important stuff, like taking the doll along for a bike ride.

If they have other toys to take care of, they can wear the doll on the back as well.

The best thing about doll carriers is that they’re very easy to make at home. It doesn’t have to carry a heavy baby but merely a doll or a teddy so you don’t have to be too meticulous about it. Any piece of fabric will do, and you need very little, so it can cost nothing at all. I made my son a couple of carriers today (will post some pics later)- and I sew really bad. If I can do it, anyone can…

Some moms I know are happy to wear the baby carrier as a means to hide the extra weight and milk stains on their shirts, and a pretext for not wearing fancy clothes.

Other moms are quite the opposite- they don’t let the trivial fact of carrying a baby most of the time stop them from dressing nicely. Most moms pick the color of their carrier so it would fit their general style of dressing, but some moms simply buy several carriers so they have a mix&match collection and never go out with a carrier that clashes with their blouse. I actually know moms who have special evening wear black silk carriers to wear when going out. There are, of course, other good reasons for having a large collection of carriers- I’ll have to write another post about that

Some carriers come with cute baby patterns, like teddy bears or Kitty cats, but most carrier makers (being moms themselves, usually) seem to understand that the carrier is an item for the mom and not for the kid, and choose fabric patterns that would fit an elegant woman’s wardrobe.
