How early can you use a carrier?

The youngest baby I personally know that was put in a carrier was about 2 hours old when first carried. A friend of mine used a pouch, of her own making, to take him from the delivery room to the ward.

From the baby’s point of view, the sooner you carry it, the better. It’s never too soon to be cradled in mommy’s warm lap (unless there’s need of some urgent medical treatment, of course). Naturally, you have to use a suitable carrier for a Newborn.

From mom’s point of view, things are different. Some moms- like my friend- feel able to walk around carrying their babies very soon after birth, but some can hardly even walk for days. In fact, every woman, no matter how she feels or how easy was her delivery, should avoid excessive efforts for several weeks after delivery. So how soon can you use a carrier? My answer is- as soon as there is someone who wants and can carry the baby.

My partner brought our Over the Shoulder sling to the hospital and walked around with our baby inside it the day after he was born, while I lied in bed, very weak and hardly able to walk myself, let alone carry a 7 pound baby.

I found this lovely video of little Dahlia’s first time in a carrier. Enjoy!
