The soft back-pack carrier is the occidental response to the Ethnic Mei Tai. It combines the comfort of a modern carrier with clips and very simple wearing instructions, with the traditional (and recommended) tummy to tummy position with baby legs spread and hugging your body (as opposed to hanging straight down). They allow front and back carrying positions and hip carry as well (although personally I think a sling is a much better option for that).
Some soft pack brands like Ergo and Yamo are designed for babies above 2-3 months old with head controll. the Ergo baby carrier offers a solution for carrying infants, too, although personally I don’t like it very much. The Beco, which is the closest one to Mei tai, can be used from birth as it is made with enough fabric to support entire baby’s body.
Whether you start at birth or a few months later, these carriers can be useful for years, not only for everyday use but for trecks and outings with big toddlers as well.
