I have always thought that the rigid baby carrier was a modern invention of our modren society.
Apparently, I was mistaken: The Dayak people, Borneo’s native farming population, traditionally use a rigid type of baby carrier made of various materials such as wood, beads and rattan.
From this picture it is obvious this carrier can only be used for sitting babies. It seems actually like the traditional version of modern rigid backpack baby carriers.
