It’s hot, carrying children in summer. Having a live human being attached to you is like walking around with a hot water bottle on your chest or back. And we haven’t said anything yet about the carrier fabric, it’s quantity, thickness and number of layers…
Naturally, in summer you would prefer lighter carriers with less fabric. Wraps- a wonderful carrier in most aspects- is, in my opinion, a little too much when it’s really hot, unless you wear it like a sling.
Ethnic carriers such as Mei tai or Onbuhimo, and soft pack carriers are fine, but some people might find them a little too thick. Podegis may be more or less suitable, depending on the quantity of fabric- The larger ones that wrap your entire body are obviously more cosy in the winter
The most perfect carriers for summer are unpadded slings and pouches and best of all are net carrier such as Tonga. This is actually the most compact carrier I’ve ever seen
However, I do not advise choosing a carrier just because it has less or thinner fabric, if it means compromising your or your baby’s comfort. I think it is better to sweat rather than suffer from backache, and I know my baby always liked to be well cooked in my Mei tai, and never complained about the heat…
